Company History

Hubbard and Drake General-Mechanical Contractors, Inc. was founded as Hubbard Maintenance Contractors on February 14, 1984, by Kenneth W. Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard began his career as a pipefitter with Yeargin Construction and Buchanan Mechanical Contractors in Birmingham, Alabama. The first company projects consisted primarily of onsite maintenance at American Fructose corn processing plant with his entire crew of four.
In May 1985, Joe Drake joined the company as a partner, with thoughts of diversifying into other areas and plants. Mr. Drake brought 21 years of industrial and plant engineering experience from the Boeing Company, Wolverine Tube, and Saginaw Division of General Motors. Together, Joe and Kenny expanded their operations into many of North Alabama’s blue chip industries, driven by the philosophy that quality work at reasonable prices would best promote company growth and longevity. This philosophy has worked so well that most of our business is derived from word of mouth and repeat business.
In September of 2002, Scottie Hubbard purchased the company, ensuring another generation of quality work and company growth. Scottie, a Licensed Professional Engineer, brought a mechanical engineering background along with field experience to the company. During his first six years, Hubbard and Drake saw a 100% increase in gross sales and projects completed. Also, Hubbard & Drake introduced project management techniques that allow one person to control projects from estimation to completion, a move that has increased accountability and improved customer satisfaction.

In January of 2010, Chris Howard became a partner in Hubbard & Drake after many years of dedicated service.  Chris’ background includes ASME code experience as well as extensive project management experience.  Hubbard & Drake saw continued growth in the following years with the addition of Mike Staudt and Mike McLamb as project managers. In 2017, Scottie Hubbard retired, while Chris Howard took on the roll as company President. Mike McLamb assumed the roll of VP of Fabrication, and Mike Staudt became the VP of Construction. With this new leadership structure, the company continued to grow and prosper. In 2021, the Company added an Environmental Division to it’s ever-evolving profile of services. As Hubbard & Drake passes 40 years of service, we take pride in our reputation of being The Standard in industrial contracting across the Southeast US.
